Slipping Through My Fingers

This week my daughter turned eleven.

Last night she had her first ever, awake-over sleep-over party.

Slipping Through My Fingers

~ Björn Ulvaeus & Benny Andersson

Schoolbag in hand, she leaves home in the early morning

waving goodbye with an absent-minded smile

I watch her go with a surge of that well known sadness and I have to sit down for a while
the feeling that I’m losing her forever

and without really entering her world
I’m glad whenever I can share her laughter
that funny little girl

slipping through my fingers all the time
I try to capture every minute
the feeling in it

slipping through my fingers all the time
do I really see what’s in her mind
each time I think I’m close to knowing
she keeps on growing
slipping through my fingers all the time

sleep in our eyes, her and me at the breakfast table
barely awake I let precious time go by
then when she’s gone,

there’s that odd melancholy feeling
and a sense of guilt I can’t deny
what happened to the wonderful adventures

the places I had planned for us to go
well, some of that we did, but some we didn’t
and why, I just don’t know

slipping through my fingers all the time
I try to capture every minute
the feeling in it

slipping through my fingers all the time
do I really see what’s in her mind
each time I think I’m close to knowing
she keeps on growing

slipping through my fingers all the time
sometimes I wish that I could freeze the picture
and save it from the funny tricks of time

Slipping through my fingers

Slipping through my fingers all the time.

Schoolbag in hand, she leaves home in the early morning

waving goodbye with an absent-minded smile……………

Great post Karen! I guess you know taking pictures and videos is our only hope. I know you know this. I loved that movie, Momma Mia?. So, is ‘Slipping Through My Fingers’ and ABBA song then?

Ms. Karen, have you ever done a Guest post’? Do you have the time? My time is stretched right now with birthdays and parents in town. I would be honored if you wanted to fill a page for me. If you don’t have the time I understand. ~I have no time 😦

Well, I’ve learned my lesson (for today) about reading posts on my lunchbreak! I got to the end and my eyes were about to burst forth with teardrops of every size and shape. Anyhow, with a few hard swallows I closed this wonderful share to return to it tonight where if I felt like crying I could just full-on ball my head off. 🙂 And, I could listen to the song whilst I write-even better. I completely relate as I watch my little one grow into her own more and more. Happy Birthday, Hannah. A sweet and rich heart that I can feel from hundreds of miles across the country. XOXO
